PERFORMANCE BEYOND TWO SHORES

Performances beyond two shores is a European cooperation project between cultural operators who aim to strengthen the professionalisation, production and mobility of young Arab artists in Europe.

We produce high quality theatre pieces, foster dialogue and experience sharing between artists and programmers, reach to new audiences, and facilitate networking between partners and provide their staff with opportunities for strengthening their capacities.

We envision a new narrative of Europe based on intercultural dialogue, mutual acceptance, curiosity and open-mindedness.

Our main activities are:

  • The production of a new theatre performance by leading Syrian Director Wael Ali. “Under a low sky” which tells the story of a Forty-year-old Syrian cinematographer obsessed with the idea of losing his past, will tour all eight project partners in Europe (Naples, London, Weimar, Athens, Plovdiv, Amsterdam, Brussels, Marseille).
  • A series of six gatherings with a total of 15 young Arab artists recently arrived and now based in Europe. They are organised by partners during their festivals to exchange ideas on artistic practice and the working in the culture field in Europe.
  • Staff exchanges between partners to strengthen their capacities, share experience and learn from each other.

The project supported by the European Commission within the framework of the Creative Europe Programme and follows Performance(s) between two shores: Arab artists in Europe, implemented between June 2016 and December 2017.

The project is based on a strong partnership between European cultural institutions. All partners produce high quality cultural and artistic events engaged with the Euro-Mediterranean region. They actively produce and facilitate the diffusion of performing arts in Europe, especially with young actors of contemporary creation.

ONE-DANCE-WEEK

ONE DANCE WEEK FESTIVAL
Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The festival started in 2008 as the only forum in the country entirely devoted to contemporary dance — one of the most rapidly developing genres in contemporary art that knows no boundaries between techniques, art forms and aesthetics, that turns rules and roles upside down and makes the impossible possible — which is what constitutes its bold and attractive gesture. Over the past 11 years, the festival presented some of the most interesting phenomena in the sphere of contemporary dance practices, including performances from Europe, Asia, Africa and America, which show different dance trends.

With the show Sous un ciel bas, Sirian author and director Waël Ali tells of Jamal, a forty year old Sirian documentarist, living for many years in France. He is obsessed by the loss of his past: the places of his youth are gone, those who were a part of his world have now left and moved elsewhere. He feels trapped by the idea that this somehow impeedes his creativity: «how can I look at the present if I no longer have a past?» He therefore embarks on a journey in search of something that may restore his life story.

How do you do theater when the reality that you try to grasp keeps getting affected by constant and violent changes until it dissipates? How do you do theatre in times of war when you’re out of the country? For whom do you do this theater here? Under low skies goes back and forth between two pathways, two journeys.
It’s a documentary theatre performance based on a saga but also a text that is very fragmented. Under low skies shows a character called Jamal, a Syrian documentary filmmaker, in his forties just like Waël, who has been living in France for several years. He feels trapped in a situation that prevents him from creating images, “how can I look, simply look at the present when I don’t own anymore past”. Obsessed by the idea of having lost his past, and feeling powerless in the face of abandoned and destroyed places disappearing from his memory, he also witnesses his friends getting scattered all over the world. He tells Waël that the places from his childhood have disappeared, the houses he used to visit have been abandoned and those who constituted his little personal world in Damascus are now living in different countries.

Dounia Mahammed (1990, Brussels) graduated from the drama department of KASK in Ghent in 2015. Her work shows a particular sensitivity to language, humour and visual thinking. In her graduation performance Salut Copain (2015) she uses language as a medium to philosophise, dream, draw, falter and ask questions on stage. In her new solo w a t e r w a s w a s w a s e r (2017), she looks for a new way of communicating, in which her capricious associations and movements enter into a poetic dialogue with the music of Alan Van Rompuy. The performance was awarded five stars in De Standaard: ‘Through her virtuoso use of language, sound and rhythm, she makes the banal special and the rusted liquid again’. As a writer and actress, Dounia Mahammed has a great interest in social issues, philosophical reflections and the poetry of the everyday. Her work wants to tell something about man and being human, and in doing so navigates between wonder and despair. In 2019 she will focus on research into the fragility and vulnerability of people and things. She is guided by a bunch of questions.
